Project Description

The Bow Lake Wind Farm was one of TULLOCH’s earliest renewable energy projects and helped catalyze our pursuit of renewable infrastructure work across Canada. Located north of Sault Ste. Marie near Montreal River, Ontario, Bow Lake is a 60 MW wind energy development with 36 turbines and more than 40 kilometres of access roads across rugged terrain.

The project is a partnership between BluEarth Renewables Inc. and Batchewana First Nation, a long-standing partner of TULLOCH. As a 50 percent partner in the wind farm, Batchewana First Nation allocates project funds toward community housing, infrastructure, health care, and cultural programs. TULLOCH’s relationship with Batchewana First Nation reflects our commitment to partnerships that create local participation, economic value, and long-term community benefit.

TULLOCH was selected by DP Energy in 2010 as the lead engineering firm, supporting the project through permitting and preliminary design before continuing into construction. Our work included the Class Environmental Assessment, pit and quarry permitting, aerial LiDAR coordination, preliminary road design, geotechnical program management, environmental monitoring, and an existing road condition report for the EPC agreement.

As the project advanced, the EPC contractor engaged TULLOCH for detailed civil design and construction surveys. BluEarth Renewables later retained TULLOCH as Owner’s Representative for Balance of Plant contract scopes, including full contract administration, inspection, environmental monitoring, Crown land plans, and as-built plans.

Bow Lake is recognized as one of Ontario’s most demanding wind energy construction projects because of its remote location, rugged terrain, access requirements, and complex stakeholder environment. The project required coordination with Forestry Management Units, trappers, traditional land users, and parties concerned with at-risk species. It remains an important milestone in TULLOCH’s renewable energy portfolio and reflects our ability to support complex infrastructure in challenging northern environments.
