Project Description
The Wataynikaneyap Transmission Project is bringing reliable grid power to 17 remote First Nations communities in Northwestern Ontario through a 1,800 km alternating current transmission system. Since 2016, beginning with the Pikangikum Power Line component, TULLOCH has supported multiple phases of this major infrastructure initiative for clients including PowerTel, RES Canada, and Wataynikaneyap Power. During construction it consistently ranked on ReNew Canada’s Top 100 Infrastructure Projects list.
TULLOCH’s work has included geotechnical investigations, geological desktop studies, legal surveys, construction layout, as-builts, volumetric surveys, quality control inspections, and daily reporting. Our team also prepared descriptive mapping to support Crown Land requirements and Licenses of Occupation across the transmission corridor.
In 2019, TULLOCH established the 170 First Nation Joint Venture with the Independent First Nation Alliance in connection with the Wataynikaneyap Power Transmission Project. The joint venture supported direct collaboration, revenue sharing, employment opportunities, and on-the-job training for community members during later phases of TULLOCH’s work on the broader initiative.
The project reflects TULLOCH’s ability to support complex linear infrastructure in remote and northern environments. It also demonstrates our experience coordinating technical work across Crown Land, First Nation lands, private property, construction sites, and challenging field conditions.
